At 41, Torrie Wilson says she is in the best shape of her life. The model, former WWE wrestling star, fitness competitor, and, most recently, founder of her own fitness website, answers some questions and shares a fit-girl workout!
MS&F You’ve been a fitness competitor, model, cheerleader, wrestler, and so much more. What are you most proud of and how have these things shaped you into the person you are today?
TW I can't say I'm “most proud” of any of them. Every single one of them I worked for and worked hard at doing well. I would say they were all pretty cool for where I was in life at the time that I did each. Being an athlete my whole life, I would definitely say that it has instilled a great work ethic. As an athlete, I have always kept pushing myself to improve. That's also a great lesson for life: keep working on yourself, evolving, setting higher or different goals. I am probably most proud when I think back at all the things that I deliberately set out to do and accomplished.
MS&F Do you see yourself as a fitness role model for other women? Why/Why not?
TW I never feel comfortable with the term 'role model,' but I do think that I have something good to offer women. It can be easy to judge a book by its cover, but I have been through A LOT and there is no better teacher than experience. I conquered an eating disorder at a very young age, have thyroid issues, have had back surgery, tried just about every type of diet while traveling on the road with the WWE, traveled close to 300 days per year while still maintaining my fitness, gone through all types of workout crazes and am no spring chicken! But I feel I look better and feel better now than I did at 25. One common thread that never really went away? I've always lifted weights.
MS&F What is your normal fitness regimen like from week to week?
TW I like to mix it up and add hot yoga, spinning, and outdoor workouts, but my staple workouts consist of five days of lifting weights, and I do cardio pretty much six days a week. I do cardio (usually 45 minutes of stairs) because I love it. It keeps my head straight. As far as lifting, some days I lift heavy, some days I do HIIT circuits. I have really learned to listen to my body and do what I am feeling. Working out for me is like therapy. But if I am tired and don't feel like working out, I listen and lay low, whether that's one day off or three. That philosophy has kept me from burnout.
MS&F How has staying in shape at 41 differed from your 20s? What do you know now that you wish you knew then?
TW When I was younger I was much more stressed out about my diet. When I knew I couldn't have something, I wanted it more. I wish I would have had the mentality I have now. If I want something, I eat it. I live life. My metabolism is faster now and I accredit that to years of lifting weights and having a lot of dense muscle.
MS&F So many models have had bouts with eating disorders. How did you overcome yours?
TW I overcame mine through fitness. I committed to a fitness contest and had to eat six meals a day. Thankfully I admired the fit look.
MS&F Do you still eat six meals a day?
TW I still eat smaller meals throughout the day but I am much more relaxed. I need carbs and have learned that over the years my body is much better with them.
MS&F Favorite healthy snack?
TW Probably hard boiled eggs or hummus and veggies.
MS&F What is your favorite mantra?
TW We are what we believe we are, good or bad, and we can achieve exactly what we believe we can.
MS&F What advice would you give other women who are considering a career in wrestling or fitness competitions?
TW I say to anyone who has a dream...go for it!!! The more people say you can't, use that as your fuel to make sure that you DO!
MS&F What has been your favorite shining moment in your career?
TW I am going to say I haven't had it yet but it's coming!
MS&F What are you doing these days and do you have some big future plans worth mentioning?
TW I recently launched my website, TorrieWilsonFit.com, and am launching an app as well. I have lots of home circuit workouts that are 20 minutes or less, recipes, diet advice, and blogs on fitness, diet, and meditation. My goal is to help women reach their goals and feel confident. There is nothing more satisfying to me than watching a woman gain back her confidence and power. MS&F
